Also referred to as an ‘AHU’, an Air Handling Unit is equipment designed to distribute and condition the air in conjunction with heating, ventilating and air conditioning systems or HVAC.

Constructed mainly of a large metal box that uses blowers, heaters or cooling elements, each unit is fitted to existing ductwork that runs through the building sending conditioned air throughout and back again.

Other air handling units include a makeup air unit that uses 100% of the air outside and conditions it but does not use re-conditioned air. Sometimes, AHUs can be positioned outside on roofs, called packaged units (PU) or rooftop units (RTU).

Keeping your air handling units maintained will not only increase their efficiency and prolong their life, but it will also reduce your overall energy costs.

Even if you have maintained your air handling unit to the highest standard, there will come a time when it needs to be replaced or completely refurbished. At this point, when the unit has begun to perform poorly and deteriorate, any maintenance costs begin to spiral out of control.

Refurbishment is always the first option where possible, but in extreme situations, replacement is the only option to maintain optimum efficiency. We will advise which is the best option, and source the right AHU parts.

Where refurbishment is feasible, this may be chosen as an option to replace where the cost is lower than a new plant, and it involves a shorter downtime and less disruption in an occupied building.
