What is HVAC and what does HVAC stand for?

What is an HVAC system?

The primary purpose of a Heating, Ventilation and Air-Conditioning (HVAC) system is to control the environmental conditions inside a home or property, ensuring your building maintains a decent level of air quality, ventilation and filtration. But most importantly, it controls the climate of your premises, ensuring the proper temperature levels are maintained and regulated whilst ensuring the correct moisture levels are maintained.

How do HVAC Systems Work?

HVAC systems move clean hot or cold air in indoor spaces. These are three elements of the systems. 

  •       Heating the Air
  •       Cooling the Air
  •       Moving the Air 

Each unit starts by bringing in the air to a building; it then purifies the air to ensure it is free from contaminants such as fungi, dust and bacteria.

Cooling the Air

To cool the air, the warm air moves through the coils filled with refrigerant; next, it moves into the air handler and into ducts. As the cool air moves through the ducts, any noxious gasses produced during the process are expelled through the flue.

Heating the Air 

Heating the air works the same as the a/c unit that cools the air, but the opposite happens, the air comes in, is heated then expelled. To produce warm air, a heat pump draws the cold outside; it’s drawn into the refrigerant, which heats the coils. The air is drawn over those heated coils, where it rises to the desired temperature and is blown into the building at the desired temperature.

What is the difference between an HVAC and an AC system?

In simple terms. An air conditioning unit cools the air in the AC unit, but to heat the air and push moisture out is an HVAC unit.  

There are several types of HVAC systems, each working slightly differently to control temperature and conditions. You may need an optimum temperature in a retail setting, or maybe you’re a manufacturing premise requiring the optimum air quality level.
